If you haven’t already read, you do not need to do this anymore. An easier web-based jailbreak is available over at http://ispotunrestricted.com/2.0/. Only follow this guide if you continue to have issues with the 2.0 version.
WARNING: THIS CAN AND WILL MOST LIKELY VOID YOUR WARRANTY AS WELL AS YOUR SERVICE PLAN WITH CLEARWIRE!
DOWNLOAD THIS CONFIG FILE AVAILABLE RIGHT HERE.
IF YOU ALSO WANT TELNET ENABLED WITH A ROOT USER, DOWNLOAD THIS FILE.
IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE AUGUST 5TH FIRMWARE, IT IS RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO FOR BEST RESULTS. YOU CAN FIND THE FIRMWARE HERE.
What does this config file do?
Works with all firmwares before the v1994 firmware update
Removes the WiFi restrictions
Enables USB tether mode
Disables the known Clearwire Auto-Update features (OMA-DM & upgrade.conf)
Sets, ENABLE_INB_MAGENT, ENABLE_INB_CAL,ENABLE_INB_TELNET,ENABLE_INB_FTP all to NO.
Only the telnet-enabled.bin file will ensure that telnet is enabled and add a new user.
User: iSpot (case sensitive)
Pass: iSp0tUnR3strict3d
Change the password immediately after logging in by doing “passwd iSpot”
Instructions:
Load the new config file (file must end in .bin) in the admin panel on the iSpot web portal. Do not load this as a firmware, it will not work. After you are done loading the config file, the iSpot will turn off. Once you turn it on, one of two things will happen. Either:
You will see a new access point called “IMW-C600W” without any encryption, besure to re-enable those settings.
or
You will see a new access point called “iSpot – Unrestricted“, which is WPA encrypted with a password of “unrestricted“.
After it’s back up and running you will be able to enjoy the unrestricted features of the iSpot. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me by email or on twitter @Jaku.

What is CLEAR going to do regarding this or those contracts who uses a hacked ispot?
No idea, I don’t work for Clear so I can’t tell what they are going to do. It wouldn’t be to hard for Clear to tell who is using a hacked iSpot with all the auto-updating removed. So they could go after the users by increasing their plan cost to the normal clearspot price, or they could do nothing at all. So with anything like this, it’s a use at your own risk sort of thing.
As another weblog noted the firmware is using linux and busybox, ( http://wojo.com/blog/2010/8/10/initial-clear-ispot-hacking.html ) Clearwire better release the GPL source *ASAP*. Googling “site:infomark.co.kr gpl” gave up this this small spreadsheet:

Yep, I know. I’m working with wojo a bit on some side of things. We are both working to achieve the same things.
I am testing the new config file ispot on the aug 4 firmware. My iPhone was able to see the ssid and connects. My netbook and htc dash cannot see the ssid and wouldn’t connect even after I keyed in the ssid and wpa string.
I have changed the ssid and wpa keystring after after reboot from the new config. That should not matter? Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Alan,
I haven’t seen any problems like that before. I suggest trying to do a factory restore by turning the device on and holding the power button until you see yellow lights. After which, release and turn back on after it powers off. See if your phone and netbook still cannot connect. If they can then use the config file again to see if the problem repeats.
Hi Jaku:
Holding the power key till the light turns amber will reset the unit back to factory and somehow wipe out your config. I did that and the SSID changed back to factory default ispot??? and MAC filter active.
I reapplied your config file and now everything is ok. The ssid is broadcasted and seen by all wireless devices.
Thanks !
Side note: the ispot requires good signals to work. Once it logs on to a good signal, it stays connected when the signal is weakened.
Glad you got it working!
hate to be so back end but can you please give me detailed info on how to root this devise to tether with any divice like do i need a mac to do this? i plug it up usb on my windows my cpu dont see the divice just charges the battery. help
Darkeycaine,
No worries. You don’t need a mac to root this device. First thing you will want to do is have the config file downloaded, I recommend the original one posted on the site unless you are familiar with telnet and linux. From there, you’ll want to access the iSpot portal page, which can be found at http://192.168.1.1/ or http://iSpot/. Under Tools, on the top will be an “Admin” page, it will prompt you for a password, which should be the admin for the username and admin for the password. From there scroll to “Restoring the Configuration Settings”, select the file you downloaded and then click “Restore Device Configuration File”. After that it should be all set and working for any device.
Had a question. I have the .bin
file downloaded to my mac. Do I
have to connect to the iSpot at
192.168.1.1 from my mac or from
an approved iDevice (due to mac
filtering)? I doubt if my laptop
would be able to connect to the
device, due to mac address filtering.
All devices are able to connect to the iSpot. It’s just that not all of them are able to get internet from it. So your laptop would be able to connect and then you can upload the .bin file.
after uploading the config file i cant use
User: iSpot (case sensitive)
Pass: iSp0tUnR3strict3d
to log in
please help
Neohelix,
You are connecting with telnet correct? Can you show me the output of your screen when you try to login? I am on AIM (hax by jaku) or email jaku [at] hax.by if you want to talk to try and get it working.
If i upload the config file, if there a way to revert back to the original one? I want to try it, but also want to be able to undo it.
Yep, just do a factory restore. With the device powered on, hold the power button for around 10-15 seconds, until you see yellow\amber lights. Once you see them you can release and when you turn it back on it will be default settings with all of the changes the script made gone.
HI,
Thanks for posting. I wanted to know if there is a hack for someone who has the “non-ispot” 4g device? I purchased one and rec’d another and wanted to know if there was a way to hack the second device to access.
Thanks
Technically, yes. The Clearwire “Clearspot” http://www.clear.com/spot/4g can be modified in the same way. While it would do no harm to the device to upload my config, it isn’t exactly made for it and I wouldn’t recommend it.
I don’t have access to a regular Clearspot, but if you were to create a config of yours and send it, I could modify it in the same way as the iSpot config and post it.
Thanks for doing this. What’s motivating you to put this out for everyone’s use?
No problem, I enjoy doing this sort of thing and that’s sorta my motivation behind the device. I wasn’t really interested in the iSpot until I heard about the restrictions, and so once I heard that I had to see if I could remove it. After finding a way, it was only natural that I release how others can do it as well.
Doh, upgraded to the Aug. 15 R1821 firmware. How are you approaching root now?
Foo,
If you provided a correct email address you could of been an early beta tester. Still can if you contact me before release. I have a solution that works, it’s not the exact solution I wanted to use at this point but I feel that it will be the best way to go unrestricting the device this time.
I just bought a new iSpot, came with firmware 1994. Doesn’t seem to work with this method.
Mark,
I sent you an email with some instructions to test the new method.
New method works great. Took one extra click as compared to ‘fixing’ an iPad with jailbreakme.com but nearly as easy! Great work Jaku!
I was playing with the idea of having the slider like with jailbreakme but figured I shouldn’t spend time on getting that working and just do a normal link.
Hey Jaku,
I received my iSpot on Aug 13.. and it has firmware version 1.9.9.4 as well. Can I help you out on the beta test too? It still has access to “upgrade firmware saved from file” under Tools> upgrade, and “Restoring the cofiguration settings” under Tools>admin
Software version: 2.0.0.0 [R1679 (Jul 6 2010)]
Firmware version: 1.9.9.4
Hardware version: R05
WIMAX API version: 1.2
Thanks!
Hmm, if it has version 1.9.9.4 it shouldn’t have the config option. Are you sure that is still there? If so you shouldn’t need the new version. I’m interested in looking at your iSpot if you do indeed have those options.
Hey! I just ordered an ispot for the sole purpose of doing this.
Does anyone know if the new ispots shipping today (or yesterday) are still “jailbreak-able.” I’m really hoping they didn’t close the functionality before I get mine.
Also, can they tell if I’m using a windows laptop? How will it void the service plan (as stated on the top of this page)?
Thank you!
The new ones shipping do have the new firmware, but I do have a solution to “jailbreak” them. I’m just keeping it under wraps a bit and giving people access to testing, if you really need it, let me know and you can be a tester if it isn’t released yet.
I see that you have an upcoming ‘version 2.0′, and you mention the “august 5th firmware”.
Has Clear ‘fixed’ this stuff with a new firmware upgrade? I don’t have an iSpot yet. If I order one, would it likely have new firmware that can’t be opened-up? (until 2.0 comes out)?
Can firmware always be downgraded? I looked at the 080510.bin firmware image you have – the file format looks very straightforward (kernel+JFFS2 image+I’m guessing Baseband firmware). It seems you could have ‘pre-hacked’ firmware downloads if you wanted.
I’m interested in helping out with the hacking effort, if you are interested (I have a device hacking/reverse-engineering background).
Paul,
The August 5th update allows the config files to still be uploaded, the August 16th does not. So for best results I recommend users still upgrade to the August 5th, but nothing else.
You are right that the firmware does look straight forward, I haven’t had much time to mess around but would love to try a few things with that route. I have not had much success in downgrading but I haven’t tried all that hard either. Any help you can provide would be great.
thanks jaku for the hard work and hack
1) i purchased the ispot when it was first available but now clear must have AUTO-updated my firmware because it is v1994
Software Version 2.0.0.0
[R1679 (Jul 6 2010 17:57:37)]
Firmware Version 1.9.9.4
should i wait for your v2.0 just to be safe? or try it as a beta tester? don’t want to brick it cuz i’ll have no net access.
2)currently MAC spoofing in winxp and linux mint, but would rather unlock it and usb tethering… let me know your suggestions…please email if possible.
3)also, as a side not, your reply threads on this page are unreadable when the replies are all moved to the right side.
That is very interesting. It seems they might have been able to push down a firmware with the OMA-DM option. Which we were afraid they might be able to do. The beta of the new version won’t do any real harm, if something doesn’t work you can still always do a factory reset.
I’ve search but I can’t figure out what Magnet and Cal is.
Could you please explain what these services are?
I’m not to sure what magnet is, but cal appears to be a calibration tool for clear to use. You are able to disable those services by adding a “#” to the start of the service in /etc/inetd.conf
I just bought an iSpot. Works fine with ipad/iphone, and can see SSID with pc-laptop, but it won’t connect. Do I need the new beta test method? Please send. Thanks.
Dan,
The Aug 5th firmware has a wifi update, I suggest updating to that. The new method would not help with your issue.
Can confirm John’s experience. Clear auto-updated me as well after jailbreak:
Firmware Information
Software Version : 2.0.0.0 [R1679 (Jul 6 2010 17:57:37)]
Firmware Version : 1.9.9.4
However, it’s still working for my 2006 13″ Macbook (Core Duo). I guess I’ll have to hold off on buying that MBP for awhile.
Glad to hear that it is still working. It does appear Clear is able to update over the air on the older units if the user didn’t disable the 2 updating services mentioned on the site. I have reasons to believe that the new iSpots being shipped still have the old firmware but the units are updating once the customer receives and turns them on.
So, the iSpot 080510.bin file above will revert to the earlier firmware, correct? Will it stop Clear from auto-updating me again?
Mirra,
It will not “revert” it is suggested to update to that if you are on an older firmware, if you are on the new one it will not downgrade you. We are working on solutions for downgrading but nothing concrete yet.
i do have it working thanks and how ever i had a little trouble downloading the config using internet explorer or opera i had to download safari and mac updater for windows to download the config to a folder after that it was very easy and thanks very much.
Glad to hear you got it working.
To darkeycaine and others having trouble telneting to the device:
You need to INCLUDE the string “(case sensitive)” after the “iSpot” when typing in the user. Was this some kind of joke on us jaku?!
Steven,
I have no idea what you are talking about. The user is “iSpot” which is case sensitive, the account name is certainly not “iSpot (case sensitive). If you had that happen to you, that is certainly an odd case and have never heard it doing that. I don’t even know how it could do it as the script doesn’t have the words “case sensitive” in it at all.
I have a Spot not an iSpot and Telnet was open to the world. For security I #ed out everything in etc/inetd.conf to stop telnet, magnet, and cal. Is there a way to open telnet to local access only?
Kevin,
Yes, in /etc/nat.conf you should have a line ENABLE_INB_TELNET=”NO”
That will allow it only on the internal side, the script should do this but only if you’re on the August 5th firmware and above.
Shouldn’t we complaint to Clear? I did. I had mine configed to my need- wireless network name, security, password ect, then firewalled to let my airmouse and apps work, even filter out MAC addresses and now its useless since I cant upload the setting !@#@@! because they auto updated my device (I’m one of those unfortunate who used the setting you recommended and then forgot about it till too late)
The reason I did it bc Clear doesnt let my 1st gen iphones get on the net in the first place and after 70 minutes of phone call of no help who blamed it on Apple. I found your website while I was on the phone with them.
Told them I knew exactly what was wrong as they instructed me to upgrade, reset the firmware according to the dumb SENIOR engineer who he was talking to. I confirmed with them I was on the latest Aug 4 10Pm version b4 I called and the white list has 37 MAC devices which doesnt have mine iPhone MAC. And they even have the audacity of blaming it on Apple. Told them mine has never fail to connect to any network device except Clear iSpot which has mine blacklisted according to the Super page.
Do they just think everyone is as dumb as them? It is BLACK and WHITE not grey LIST. Yet they made me wasted 70 minutes of my time and theirs?
I’m not sure that complaining will do much good. They might bring back the custom configs once the we are able to downgrade firmware. Cause then it won’t really matter and they’d prolly rather have people uploading configs that hacked firmwares.
I received an iSpot from them this week, had July firmware.
I could not get it working with my Ipod, because it thought it was not an iPod and kept going to their page and so I finally called tech support. The tech said that I needed to update the firmware because some mac id’s were not recognized and that It could only be updated locally, that no auto-update was available for the iSpot.
So I download the firmware from your site, broke out of jail and badda boom badda bing, it worked like a champ. Even the signal is better now, not sure why but it’s working great! It went from 2 bars to 4 in same exact location, go figure?
Thanks for making this site and helping everyone, much appreciated!
Glad you got everything working in the end.
There any way I can test the new version of the hack? I found this site just after upgrading the firmware to the newest version and cant downgrade.
RC,
I’ve sending you an email if the email you used was the real one. If not get a hold of me.
jaku, thanks for the informative blog. Just picked mine up from a friend who didn’t have need for it. It’s been updated the v1994. If you need more beta testers, I would be very interested in helping with it. Luckily, my MBP connects to it without any problem but wouldn’t mind putting the wife’s laptop on it also. TIA.
Roger,
I just sent you an email as well.
jaku, thanks. Something strange, even though I’m on the v1994 firmware, I still have access to loading config files and firmware. So I “updated” to the Aug 5 firmware and ran the config file and am now typing away on a Dell XPS m1330 that’s hooked up to the iSpot.
Firmware now shows 1.9.9.4 and software shows 2.0.0.0 [R1786 (Aug 4 2010 20:09:06)].
Roger,
So the firmware version is always “v1.9.9.4″ we call the new firmware v1994 because of the download link by Clearwire. Take a look at the software version.
Software Version 2.0.0.0 [R1786 (Aug 4 2010 20:09:06)]
Firmware Version 1.9.9.4
If you anything after Aug4th for the software version, then you are on the newer one. But if you see Aug4th or below, then you are ok.
Thanks for the clarification. Prior to the update I was on a July software version so I was probably always okay to begin with.
Yep, I think everyone was. I think it was a big scare that everyone was on the new firmware and no one really took a look to see if the config option was still there.
I would like to test as well I have a Ispot with:
Software Version : 2.0.0.0 [R1679 (Jul 6 2010 17:57:37)]
Firmware Version : 1.9.9.4
Taj,
There is nothing to test. You have an older version of the software, you can upload config files without any issues. Please see this post, http://ispotunrestricted.com/?p=94 and then goto http://ispotunrestricted.com/?p=1 to choose what config file you want to use.
So at this point, using your current config recommended for the Aug 4th/5th firmware release, is there a way that Clear could truly push an update (or have the device pull and update) if they wanted to?
Not saying that anyone was in fact updated at all, just merely inquiring if you have all the necessary pieces disabled via the config file or if service need to be disabled.
While I haven’t looked yet at the 2 services in question, are they binaries or scripts? I may take a look later this week.
From what we have gathered there is no way, especially with the config modification. It disables the /etc/update.conf and the OMA-DM config. There is a file that seems to be for over the air firmwares, but even running that tells us all is disabled. They could certainly connect to the device somehow since they own it, or force all traffic to a certain site until it is updated but I don’t think they would do this.
I just bought an iSpot and should get it tomorrow. Is it possible to “jailbreak” the current firmware/software? I plan on following the instructions outlined on your site…
Thanks in advance!
Is there a way you can compile a firmware file that will force the ispot to use a better DNS server (such as Open DNS or VZ’s). CLEAR’s DNS is pretty laggy. Thanks.
I got it working thanks to your hack. I just hope they don’t catch me with all my torrents! Anyway, do you know how to enable Wifi channels greater than 7? The wifi settings only allow channel selection 1-7. Is this due to interference issues with the 2.4ghz wifi and 2.5ghz wimax frequencies? Maybe you guys can develop a custom fw soon to allow the standard wifi channels. oh and enable UPnP as well! Thanks
Is there a way to change the default DNS server to Open DNS or Verizon instead of Clearwire’s on the device? I did see a couple of DNS entries in the config file, but I couldn’t make the iSpot accept it after editing it. Thanks!
Try editing the /etc/resolve.conf file on the iSpot with the DNS IPs.
How/where do I find the site that is shown on the top of this page? (The one with the green “title” Restricted Use.) Are there other “admin” pages that need to be opened by directly typing in the propoer URL?
I really don’t understand your question. What site are you looking for? Are you talking about the super page? http://192.168.1.1/super/ username and password: super
Is there a walkthrough somewhere on how to edit /etc/resolve.conf? I am assuming that I need the telnet enabled firmware for that?
I’m on 1994 FW on a Clear iSpot. I would LOVE to beta test the unlock for it. The current Firmware download from http://www.ispotunrestricted.com and new config file won’t take.

Thanks!
Sent you an email.
Jaku, yes, that was the page I was looking for: the super page. Thanks for reminding me about that.
Hi, I just tried to downgrade my frimeware and software and was not able to do so.
What error did you get? Are you sure you tried updating the firmware in the firmware spot and not the config spot?
just want to drop a big THANK YOU, mr jaku!!! my iSpot was running r1679 from 7/6 and 1.9.9.4. before this i installed the .bin file i could only connect through my iMac. now, i’m surfing on my iphone 4 as well. i thought it was strange that it actually worked the way i needed it to, as my primary home isp so i didn’t call for support on the iphones (4 & 3). this went off without a hitch. smooth. awesome.
Is this still working? I would be interested in beta testing a new unlock as well if possible. I am also in Chicago.
Thank you.
Nothing is needed for beta testing anymore. It’s all released and on the site, what are you having issues with?
Is this still working? I would be interested in beta testing a new unlock as well if possible. I am also in Chicago.
Thank you.
Jaku….
First off… I really appreciate you doing this…
Can clear some how kill this updating the firmware?
Everything is possible, however it is very unlikely that they can do anything.
Very mysterious: In Safari, the telnet password in the original posting appears as iSpotUnR3strict3d, i.e. the fourth letter is a lowercase o. That did not work for me. Finally I decided copy and paste it. The copied version is iSp0tUnR3strict3d. I.e. the fourth letter is the number zero. That works.
Just received my iSpot, powered it up, connected my Macbook, and I can surf the net with no problem. Didn’t change my mac address or hack the iSpot or anything. Not sure what is going on, but am going to continue to play and but very happy so far.
just ordered an ispot yesterday- showed up 9AM today, with the august 15th software.
The firmware and configs above ‘just worked’.
Also – the kernel source is available on infomark’s page. Unfortunately the rest of the source is not:
http://www.infomark.co.kr/oss/down.html
Awesome work Jaku…. Really appreciate it…
Jaku,
Your update works great, no problems at all. I was wondering if you had a copy of the August 5 update as clear has removed it from their site. I have July 6 version and I read some reports that August 5 update improved signal for some.
Thanks
You can download the firmware at http://ispotunrestricted.com/iSpot_Software_080510.bin
Thank you very much……
This helps alot……
thanks again
You guys know that this is “theft of services” right. It’s no different than paying for basic cable and hacking it to get HBO free.
Yep, which is why it’s not recommended. But just like stealing cable, telling people how to do it isn’t illegal.
I have an interesting problem. I initially got my ispot set up correctly with the firmware version and the config file. I have an iPhone, macbook pro, and win7 laptop.
I have the MBP using DUN just fine and the Win7 laptop could find the iSpot as well. Then the other day I disconnected the iSpot from my MBP and went mobile with it with my iPhone, the MBP searched and reconnected with my an old wireless network. When I came home, the iSpot SSID was no longer available and unable to be connected to. WTH?
I’ve had that issue as well, try doing a force reset on the unit and reconnecting. It hasn’t happened more than a few times but not really sure what causes it.
Hi. I got an iSpot yesterday and changed the config file. Everything works fine, I can connect anything to it now, but I’m worried about the auto update of the software. What do I have to do to prevent it?
I have
2.0.0.0 [R1679 (Jul 6 2010 17:57:37)]
1.9.9.4
R05
1.2
Thanks in advance. Really worried here.
The software auto disables the ways we think Clear could update the device.
Hi, I got the ispot this week. It shipped with the Aug 14 firmware. First tried MAC spoofing, but the Linux ifconfig gave an error that indicated the driver won’t handle changing the upper bytes of the MAC address. And couldn’t figure how to make it work on the Motorola Droid (address changed but refused to connect; Turning wifi off & on using the gui reset the address!)
So I downgraded the firmware and applied the telnet config file. Worked for about a day, then mysteriously my config reset, so I reapplied the configuration again and will see what happens.
What are the settings for SIP for? Anyone tried the VPN passthru?
I haven’t tried fwtool yet.
I thought telnet was insecure and had been replaced by ssh.
At least it uses a recent kernel, even if their GNU compliance is poor.
So I just got my iSpot a few days ago. It is running R1821.
I cam here to grab the info I needed to hack it, but decided to give it a try first without. It connected and worked just fine on my iMac and my MacBook Pro, and also works just fine on my IPhone 3GS and 4, and the newest iPod Touch.
So, it works without any changes to the config or firmware at all. Has anyone else seen this? Is it just that Clear opened it up to work with all Apple devices to make sure they didn’t have any customer service issues due to a overly restrictive MAC range?
No, Clear didn’t open it for use with all Apple devices. However many MacBooks and iMacs will work with it. I have a 13″ MacBook that will not work with it but my 15″ works just fine. It’s just luck that some of the OUIs overlap.
I just received an ispot purchased on ebay.
Tried some setting changes in a comment by Anon in (http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2010/08/15038/comment-page-1/#comment-758117) and it didn’t work for me in winXP using my wireless card’s mac address. Although I was able to get in and change the specified setting, it didn’t make any difference – I’m able to connect to other wireless networks, but still not the ispot.
So then I tried the IP address spoofing via MacMakeup, using an itouch IP address I found in a google image search. This seemed to work as I was redirected to home.clear.com and asked to login with existing acct or create a new one. When I chose create new one and selected ispot as my device, it says “We are unable to validate the device you have as an iSpot device at this time. Please select a different device.” Is it because I’m using IE7? Any ideas how I can get around this? Do I need to borrow an itouch or iphone to register it first?
Connection problems! If I do a factory reset, I can see the ispot using my Win7 laptop just fine. But, as soon as I update the config, the ispot doesn’t show up in my wireless network list anymore. But, my iphone will still see it and connect to it fine. It’s very strange. I’ve tried changing all the wifi settings, too. Anyone else have this issue?
I’ve tried two different wireless adapters, too.
Anyword on the custom firmware Jaku? Are you still planning on doing it?
Sorry been pretty busy and ignoring this project. Hope to have some free time soon to release some new updates.
I changed the network name from iSpot – Unrestricted and when I powered off the device and back on, it no longer could be found by my computer. I did a reset, reloaded the config, and am using the original name for now. Not sure what caused the problem, but I’m leaving it alone. It’s great.
Does anyone see a pattern of what causes the iSpot to stop being seen by other devices? Does changing its settings mess things up? It happened once when I changed the network name and once when I first loaded the config file. But it seems fixable by resetting and reloading the config.
It’s not really like stealing cable. You could do this LEGALLY by jailbreak your iphone to tether. Then you are connecting to an apple device. This is just making it a bit easier. In the case of stealing cable, you break encryption which violates the DMCA. It’s more like bringing in food to a movie theater. No law is broken, but they can kick you out.
I just received the iSpot I ordered from Clear. I have downgraded to the Aug 4th release but after I upload the new config file it says “Invalid file”.
I understand you have a work around for this?
Please drop me a line. Cheers.
Ok, I tried using the new FW file for my new iSpot with the August 15th software. When I go to the ‘Admin’ part on the device, and upload the file, it tells me I can’t upgrade to software that is the same or previous version number….What am I doing wrong? Is there another screen that I need to go to?
Anybody get warnings or plan changes from Clear for excessive bandwidth usage? I’ve been average ~30gb/mon so far and no problems. You can check your monthly usage here: https://home.clear.com/account/usage. Let us know your number.
I’m also on 1994 and my IPhone 4 won’t work on it! My IPad and Ipod Touch work fine. They say there are working on the issue…but at this point I need it working.
Can you let me beta test? My email is:
roiegat@mac.com
Thanks.
Ispot through WiFi only 1.5 but tethered 3. Anyone have a Windows XP driver. Vista reached out and got one but XP said not able to find a driver. May copy that Vista driver and try in XP.
> Does anyone see a pattern of what causes the iSpot to stop being seen by other devices?
Yes, it happens to me all the time, I cannot figure it out. The blue Wifi light is on, the signal is green but no devices see it. I have to turn it off and back on, try USB cable, charger, different position, I have no idea what it’s doing?
Today I lost all ispot settings and it went back to factory defaults and now it wont pick up my laptop (Says non apple device)…. did clear push anything over the air? is anyone else affected?
i lost connection to today. i spoofed my mbp to a ihone an mozella works, but no safari. wierd
I just purchased an ISpot and it came with the following software and firmware versions Software Version : 2.0.0.0 [R1821 (Aug 15 2010 08:44:41)]
Firmware Version : 1.9.9.4
Possible to unrestrict it using the latest hack?
Around Oct 2nd, my ispot started logging the following message in the logs. It happens every 2 seconds and is causing performace problems. I’m running the pre aug 5th firmware and the config file I downloaded from here. Anyone else seen this or can tell me what this means?

has any1 had a problem with the iSpot and the 4th gen, iPod Tounch not being able to connect?
Help, I had a July 06 version of the software, firmware 1994. I successfully loaded you binary file and the ssid came up changed to IMW-C600W. I then went ahead and changed the ssid and password and unfortunately did remeber correctly the generated one I set. I did the buttone-amber-reset and it went back to the SSID and password original from Clear. However, when I tried to re-load the bin config file, save-shut-off and then turn back on, I cannot find either the IMW-C600W ssid, nor the orignal Clear ssid nor the one I had created in the first place. Seems like the new config file might not be taking ? Or at least something is different from the first time around. Thanks
Please help me jailbreak my ispot that I just bought it today 12/1/10. Thank you.
Justin,
Just follow the instructions on the site. It’s not something you can really mess up.
Hai.. I juz got my device today. So far its working with my Sony, Dell and MBP. Do you think its normal with the device? or it happen only in the beginning? I m really confuse. Thanks for ur help.
I noticed that the config enabled USB tethering. Does anyone know where I could find a Win 7 driver for the iSpot? THX
Hi guys, Im not a techie, is there any more detailed step by step instructions here? Im not sure which file to rename.bin and how to upload it. Despertly need help.
Clear cusotmer service sucks, my new ipad will not work with Clear Ispot. the Ipad is not a recognised “I” product. Go figure, It brings me back to the Clear support page only.
thanks
Ed
Just found you via Engadget. So I’d like to use the iSpot with my wired network. Is there a way to make it work with my Airport Extreme base station? Can the base station repeat the signal and still handle IP addresses over my wired network? Many thanks!
I’m not familiar enough with the Apple Base Station, if it can pick up a normal wifi signal and re-broadcast it and provide IPs then sure. But if it can’t do that normally then no.
I’ll have to start digging into this. This could be a great way to feed a wired network. Great work!
Does anyone else get dropped service a lot? I’ll get like 500-600 KB down speed, but then it’ll just kind of drop the connection, even though the light’s still green, and I have to reboot the iSpot, and that usually makes it work again, but not always. And when it does, it runs slow for a while. Think clear kind of notices the large amount of traffic and cuts me off for a little?
Never had that issue. While using my iSpot unrestricted or without. It could be the tower you’re on. Also have you tired using your iDevice and restoring to factory defaults? Also if you haven’t already I’d update to the August 15th firmware, as it does improve more than adding more devices and removing the old “exploit”.
is there any way possible to unrestrict with out a mac device or must you have a mac device first to gain access.
Do you use your laptop to unrestric the iSpot or can you use your iPhone?
It’s best to use your iPhone or iDevice but it can work with laptops.
I can’t get to the superuser page with the new jailbreak. I’m heading to 192.168.1.1/super with the username/pass super (all lowercase). No dice. Can you please help? I have telnet and tethering enabled. Thanks.
It’s Me,
The page mentions what the super user password is. If it’s not super/super it’s O#81 + the last 4 of your MAC address. Just read the page and it tells you this.
Thanks . It works .. You should put a donation link on your site .. I and probably many other appriciate your work and would like to send a little support
Mike,
Thanks, but this doesn’t really cost me anything other than time. I just like being able to help.
Hi there! Great job on the iSpot-Unrestricted and Thank you! Can you suggest of a program for Mac and Windows to auto spoof the MAC Address?just by running a script? Thanks again!
Alb3rt,
I’m not to sure of any scripts or programs that can change your MAC address on windows, on OS X it’s as easy as typing “sudo ifconfig en1 ether DE:AD:BE:EF:00:00″ into terminal. Of course you’d want to change the en1 to your interface, and the MAC to a working MAC address.
I got my iSpot today and tried the 2.0 hack today, but it doesn’t seem to have worked. How do I know if this worked? I can see the iSpot SSID, but can’t connect to it via my PC wireless NIC. I have software version 2.0.0.0 (Aug 15 ver) and firmware ver. 1.9.9.4 Thanks.
Jamie,
Does your PC not connect at all? It should still connect to the iSpot and you should be able to access http://192.168.1.1/ from it. If not try finding a friend that has an iDevice and have them goto the site.
Jaku – just got my ispot and this worked flawlessly. Thanks very much for your hard work.
on my iphone I click on the clear logo, get the screen that says “connectingto ispotunrestricted with the numbers and such…after that do I just hit the back button to goto click to reboot? when I do that the ispot turns off but doesnt come back on unless I manually restart at which time my laptop still wont connect to internet through ispot…am I doing something wrong?
Nope, that’s exactly what should be happening. Odd that it’s not working, can you login to the iSpot and check the Firmware and Software version?
Got it. updated the firmware (mental note I used my phone first but for some reason it won’t update with an upload from my phone. not sure if its the file system or the browser ??
anyway used a windows tablet and downgraded the firmware (it came with aug14th firmware) applied the config file and it works great.
thanks so much! I am a pretty light user so I hope clear will leave me alone
I wonder. Can I use the ispot aas a local network router?
ie can I connect multiple wifi machines to it and “network them” say for moving files or LAN gaming? ie will it work as a router over wifi eve if there is no “clear” service to connect to?
that would be great if it can.
Chris,
Yeah, that should just fine.
You guys rock… I am going to look at an i-spot today at a mall in Santa Ana, Ca and prolly buy one…! I hope I can use the service just like the cable internet that I am using right now which really sucks…!
i received my ispot last night and was able to jailbreak it too. it works great. thank you so much!
II got everything up and going but the only problem is how to connect to my windows xp ccomuter how to use the tethering
hi there,
i just got my ispot,
it doesnt connect to my iTouch and they claim it will only do so in mid january and that i should hibernate my account.
well well,
this is what i read:
Software Version : 2.0.0.0 [R1821 (Aug 15 2010 08:44:41)]
Firmware Version : 1.9.9.4
i cannot get to upload either bin files through its tools/upgrade update firmware from saved files
what should i do ?
Daniel,
A few guides online show how to spoof your MAC address on your laptop, if you spoof it to a known good apple MAC you could then unrestrict the iSpot and have your iTouch work before January. They already claimed that a firmware was going to be released this month, but looks like they failed on that so I wouldn’t trust them with firmware updates to fix your device.
once loaded per your instructions,
can i change the network name ?
Yes.
beautiful work.
downgraded firmware,
uploaded .bin.
it works:
- may i change SSID freely ?
- wifi network range long/medium/short equals battery consumption ? any idea of hrs for each ?
-leave mac address filter setting to disable right ?
excellent job,
i recovered from my rage and as a benefit can use it on laptop.
Daniel,
1) Yes, you can change anything you want.
2) No idea
3) Yes
Thanks.
Fist offten, Graet job on the hack!
Saw Hunter’s Q about asking how to change DNS to Open DNS but could not figure out how to do ( if possible). Any help, step by step would be great.
I don’t see any place to load the config. I just go the ispot.
I have the aug 15 firmware, 1.9.9.4
I downgraded and now connected. Were you able to lock it down?
Not really sure what you mean by lock it down? Also any reason you didn’t do the 2.0 way?
Great work. I just used the website method to unlock the ISpot. Worked great. Is there any advantage to downgrading the firmware from the Aug. 15 firmware, and then loading the bin file, or should I just leave it the way it is? Thanks.
No advantage what so ever. So leave it as is.
Jaku,
Will this jailbreak enable new Iphone4 to connect to the Ispot or it just enable non-Apple products to connect to it? I am sick and tired of waiting for Clear to upgrade the firmware so I can use with the new Iphone 4. Currently, Ispot can’t identify my Iphone as Apple product. Thank you for any advise you can give.
Linh,
Yes it will allow your iPhone 4 to work as well as anything else.
2.0 way? Top of the page says it will be much easier if you use the Aug 5th firmware.
Suedeuno,
Yeah, that was on the old way to do things. I figured people would read the newer posts and have read about the webbased jailbreak. Anyways I made it a bit easier for others now. Thanks.
bump,
So we need to edit the /etc/revolve.conf to change the dns server correct? what is the complete command for this ? thanks
From telnet you could do the following command:
echo “nameservers 4.2.2.2″ > /etc/resolve.conf
echo “nameservers 4.2.2.3″ >> /etc/resolve.conf
to add 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.23, to the file, replace those numbers with openDNS or other DNS servers if you want.
Jaku,
I am getting this message
Connecting to ispotunrestricted.com (67.213.218.3:80) wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 307 Temporary Redirect
when I click on Clear logo on http://ispotunrestricted.com/2.0/ page. Any idea what happens?
Thanks,
You have to make sure your Clearwire service is active before it will work.
From the Clear forums…
New iSpot Firmware
We are aware of the issues customers have been experiencing while trying to connect their new Apple devices to the iSpot. We are releasing the new firmware for the iSpot 1/3/2011 to rectify these connection issues. Thank you all for your patience!
Again, this issue is limited to only newer Apple devices. Please call customer service at 1-888-888-3113 between 9:00 am to 10:00 pm your local time to determine whether or not the connection problem is related to this known issue.
Thanks I saw that earlier. I’m reading to see what they changed.
Thanks Jaku. 30 second un-restriction process outstanding. Happy New Year!
I thought i did everything right. I have the 2.0 i clicked the clear logo then rebooted the ispot turned off and i turned it back on. I cant get on my laptop tho, the pass word wont work. I did the 0#8I5ca9 isn’t that the password? I tried 0,O caps I, i, i dot know what I’m doing wrong
Did my comment get deleted?
How do I disable USB tether? It messes up my Outlook on my work laptop.
Odd, I know but when I have the iSpot plugged into USB, my Outlook takes about 15 minutes to open and connect. I think it has to do with using it as a modem isntead of wifi & would like to disable the USB tether.
Thanks!
I HAVE A ISPOT AND IT WORKS WITH MACBOOK IPOT IPAD AND IPHONE I WOULD LIKE TO USE IT WITH WINDOWS PLEASE HELP ME AND GUIDE ME THANKS
Just wanted to say once again how much I appreciate you guys coming up with this hack.
a tiny annoyance. the forums. I decided not to register. REQUIRED mixed case numbers AND symbols. No thanks. Tired of remembering stupid funky passwords that do NOTHING to enhance real security requiring numbers and letters is fine but I have stopped registering on sites that require mixed case and now symbols? I just don’t need that kind of headache FOR A FORUM. a bank? ok thats critical data. there is nothing critical in a forum. I want dumb simple passwords. I have HUNDREDS of forums I have login’s for and I don’t want to have to remember stupid funky passwords for each and every one. Just too much effort for too little gain.
I guess I will just have to be a lurker.
but besides that thank you very much for the hack.
My ispot is running the 2.0.0.0 July 6 revision. I installed the new config file as detailed here, and all is working great except I can’t telnet into the ispot to change the password. I’ve tried user:iSpot and every variation I can come up with of iSp0tUnR3strict3d, and none work.
Did the password get changed in the cfg20100706175832.bin config file?
Thanks.
Sorry for the bother. Reloaded newer cfg from 2.0 page and all is well now. You can delete my messages. Thanks for all your work on this.
