Downgrade your firmware

If you haven’t already read, you do not need to do this anymore. An easier web-based jailbreak is available over at http://ispotunrestricted.com/2.0/. Only downgrade if you continue to have issues with the 2.0 version.

This post is going to be quick and straight to the point.

You can downgrade your firmware with this file, it will take you back to the August 5th version, the version number might be different but it is the same rootfs.bin and kernel.bin files. It will not have the updated OUIs that the Aug 15th file has. However, you will be able to upload custom configs again. The firmware was created with the use of the fwtool created by oz_paulb over at http://hackspot.net/iSpotBlog/.

Just download the firmware file below, and update your iSpot like any other firmware.

August 5th – Downgradable Firmware

  • Wow, that was fast-again.

Thanks jaku, will try it when I get home. Left my iSpot home this morning :)

  • Unfortunately, it’s doesn’t work for me. It went through all the motions but didn’t update- everything still the same but give invalid file when click on upload config.

OUI now has 27 MACs ?

  • Tony,

Can you post your software and firmware version? You’ll find it on the first page of the iSpot portal. It sounds like you’re uploading the file to the wrong spot, but if you are uploading it to the wrong spot then you shouldn’t even need to use the firmware.

  • Here it’s Tony
    Firmware

    Firmware Information
    Software Version : 2.0.0.0 [R1786 (Aug 4 2010 20:09:06)]
    Firmware Version : 1.9.9.4

  • Alright, just as I thought. You don’t need to downgrade, check out the post I made earlier. http://ispotunrestricted.com/?p=94

All firmwares right now are technically “v1994″ it’s the software version that you want to check for. The August 15th is bad, but August 4th is just fine. You can still upload config files.

  • But if I clicked on the button it gave me an error “invalid file”

  • What button and what file. I host 3 different files, 2 are config files and another is a firmware file. You have 2 places on the iSpot portal to upload files, one will accept firmware and the other configs. I’d like to help but I need to know more details about what you are doing and on what page.

  • Must be a corruption during upgrading the firmware. The process may be so unreliable that the senior engineer at Clear suggesting redo even it’s show up as is.

I was able to upload the cfg file after 3 upgrade to agust 5-which always show up as agust 4th but the oui numbers changed-it how I see if changes are being made.

After the router changed it’s network name back to Clear default the other day. I tried to upload my custom cfg but it gave an invalid file error. So I looked up and you mention an over the air upgrade and it fit my description so I thought that what they did- I think they did but the upgrade didn’t go though on mine. I acces the Internet at midnight and the next morning it’s reset/upgrade.

I tried a few things out b4 I came to that conclusion. I saved the cfg after upgrades/resets and try loading it back right afterward but gave me that error every time.

Last night after the third factory resets it accepted the cfg I just saved so I knew it’s back to the Aug 4th update that I did. When I went though this with tech support he mentioned he has to reset the connection on Clear end also so I don’t what good will that do.

Now I know my ispot is unupgradable :) I’m very happy. I try the agust 5th update bin on your site a few times b4 and after this incident and nothing seems to be changes but the oui numbers.

  • The Aug4th\5th firmware is technically the same. if it says 4th then that’s my mistake but I believe they released it on the 5th.

As for the OUI changing thats most of what changes yes, but the Aug 15th update also removed other features and so that is why it is important to stay on the Aug 4\5th firmware.

  • The firmware download previously on Clear’s website called “iSpot_Software_080510.bin” has a *Software* Version string of “2.0.0.0 [R1786 (Aug 4 2010 20:09:06)]“.

So, I think it’s just confusion based on the filename begin August 5th – the actual firmware is dated August 4th.

Just FYI – the subsequent firmware download release on Clear’s website (“iSpot_Firmware_v1994.bin”) has a *Software* Version string of “2.0.0.0 [R1821 (Aug 15 2010 08:44:41)]“.

As Jaku has pointed out, they both have a *Firmware* Version string of “1.9.9.4″. The original software in my iSpot was dated July 6th (R1679) – it also had *Firmware* Version 1.9.9.4.

  • I know they’re the same firmware since the Engineer burn the midnight oil and released it at 10pm Aug 4th ( on a third party server- I forgot which. Then he ported it over to Clear server the next morning so people consider it as August 5th release) but the thing that irked me is the number of OUI. It does change so I just look to this as a sign of change being made to my iSpot.

It just happen to me again last night but there was no issue this time just reload the CFG and I’m ready to go. I think the cable I used has a lose connection and fell out (doesnt actually fell out but the connection is somehow disconnected and you cant tell-I just noticed that the led on the power button is not light up.) so the iSpot ran out of juice and reset to default setting.

So it works. Going onto unlock the MAC restrictions. Thanks.

  • is there a new unrestricted fw coming out soon? we’re seeing a couple of our laptops getting restricted now (both are thinkpads). the dell or macbook pro seems to be still okay though.

  • Nash,

Have you used the firmware on this site? It should remove the restrictions for all MAC addresses so nothing should need to be updated.

  • Yes, we used the Aug4/5 firmware. It’s redirecting the thinkpads to clear’s site saying that the device is not supported.

  • After using the firmware did you update it with the config file on the site?

How do i load the firmware if i can’t access the ispot? please help!
when i log on to http://ispot or 192.168.1.1/ I get this error:

I should point out that my laptop runs ubuntu (not mac os x)

(Jaku, feel free to email me. thanks.)

  • Do you mean from Clear’s site?
    http://www.clear.com/support/download/device/ispot

Or from yours? Didn’t quite get it.
All we did is use the Aug 4/5 firmware, upload it to the iSpot, watch it reboot and after that it was working fine for a month or so. Then, suddenly some of the other laptops we had stopped working with it, so was wondering if there is a new custom fw that would re-enable access for these laptops too.

  • Tried to downgrade the FW on my new iSpot with the Aug 15th date. Tells me I can’t update with FW with the same or previous version or date. Went to “http://iSpot’, used ‘admin’, and went to ‘Admin page’, used the ‘Upgrade’ process.

    have I done something wrong?

I have Aug 5 FW and a custom config file. Well, it was sold as unlocked anyway. I can’t tether. I can upload a config file. MAC filtering is set to disable and I can change settings. But My Dell laptop is being redirected to Clear’s Support web page. “The iSpot Personal Hotspot that you are trying to connect to only supports Apple mobile devices” I may try to load the config file from this site. Please ad me to your email list. Should I just hold for the upcoming custom config file?

  • Was there a recent update to the ISPOT. Today I stopped connecting on my macbook pro. I spoofed my macbook pro to a iphone today and can connect to the web via mozella. Safari wont respond at all.

Any idea why safari is non responsive?

    thks

When is the custom fermware comming? Am I on your email list to recive update information?

  • trying to downgrade but not quite sure where we load the bin? when i try to go through admin -> upgrade it doesnt work. but there is no where else to load that bin. im currently on aug 14th firmware..

also im assuming once downgraded we can apply cfg files from there? (i dont see a spot on the current aug 14 fw)

  • Jason,

Not really sure why you are downgrading. It’s kinda pointless with the new 2.0 release. You need to login to http://192.168.1.1 [admin/admin] and goto the Admin page and firmware to apply the bin if you are still set on downgrading.

  • So theoretically speaking I should be able to do this from my Windows Laptop? So far as the 2.0 link/webpage?

  • Yep, that is correct.

  • If not, I got the downgrade stuff

  • CLEAR has figured out something. My macbookpro which has been working fine for the last couple months until today now just tries to load any page over and over in rapid succession such that the page i navigate to never will open. I have tried everything here and macspoofer an iPhone MAC address but no success. Can’t downgrade, 2.0 link gives error…help? What happened?

  • Jay,

They did just release the newest firmware about 30 minutes ago. Can you connect to the admin page and display what your version numbers are? Software and firmware.

  • Jay Rider wrote:

    Software version: 2.0.0.0 [R2209 (Dec 7 2010. 16:08:55)]

  • jay,

Did you update firmware via admin page to R2209 or are you saying you received OTA update?

  • I manually upgraded and left 2 iSpots on all night. No updates on those still.

  • Okay, so appears no OTA updates forthcoming which is good news until custom firmware, firmware spoof, or workaround on R2209.

  • Jay Rider wrote:

No I did not manual update, it must have been OTA sometime between 1/6 and 1/7. I tried to downrev it on the 7th, but it wouldn’t let me.

  • jaku,

If they’re doing OTA updates, we need some firmware spoof file to run off of so that we don’t get locked out of ispot.

  • We can already disable OMADM on older firmwares and not worry about it. They haven’t stopped letting old clients connect with OMADM. But I’m looking into it for the new firmware as well.

  • Bostonian wrote:

Looks like Clear has changed something. My unlocked ispot can no longer connect to the Wimax network.

  • This is the first case of a unlocked iSpot that I’ve heard of not being able to connect to wimax, if you have telnet enabled, you can do the command “tail -f /var/log/messages” to see what sort of errors you are getting. If you email me the logs jakubowski [at] gmail I can take a look and tell you what might be happening. Or use the forum. :)

  • Bostonian wrote:

Seems to now be working again. I have emailed the log files from when the error was occuring. Thanks.

  • Jaku,
    Any luck with R2209 yet?

  • I received Ota update today. R2209 is the version. Now laptop gets in an infinite tbd page loop.

  • Yup, something’s definitely changed. I connected with no issues, hacks or jailbreaking till today when i first encountered this horrible loop.

    What to do?

  • I rest my device because I thought it was having issues. Didn’t get to unrestricted it right away and now I have the new firmware and can’t unrestricted it.

    This stinks.

    I shall be patient.

  • Jaku, you helped me to unrestrict my ispot back in January. Sometime over the memorial day weekend, it has become restricted again and I cannot use my MBP with it anymore. Did Clear do something? Can you help me again? Thanks,

    Jay
